But things took a real bad turn on January 4th, 2016, when Gloria and her family was caught up in something awful. Gloria, her son Caleb, and her granddaughter Gianna, all lost their lives that day in a horrible way. It was like something you read in a crime novel, but this was real life.
Now, Gloria, she was 54 years old, not too young but still strong enough to get by. Her son Caleb, only 17, and her granddaughter Gianna, just 10 years old, were still young, and their lives were taken away way too soon. They all lived together in a home in Upatoi, a place that’s quiet, not much going on. You wouldn’t expect something like that to happen, but it did. It was January 4th, and when the police arrived, they found Caleb bludgeoned in a closet, poor boy. Gloria and Gianna were found too, and it was all just a terrible mess.
The police, they worked hard to find out who did such a thing. It didn’t take too long, and they found that a man named Jervarceay Tapley was behind it. The story goes, Tapley had some kind of grudge or beef with the family, but folks don’t really know for sure what went on in his mind. He was charged with the murders, and it didn’t sit right with anyone in the community. I reckon there’s nothing worse than losing your family like that, in such a brutal way.
Now, Gloria’s funeral, well, it was held just a few days after her death, on January 11, 2016. Folks in the community gathered to say their goodbyes, and it was a real hard time for the family. No one could believe what happened, and I don’t think anyone will ever forget it. It shook Upatoi right to its core. It wasn’t just a loss for her family, but for the whole town, really. People still talk about it when you go down that way, and you can see the sadness in their eyes. They all loved Gloria. She was a good woman, always there for people, doing what she could for her family.
As for the trial, well, the law doesn’t forget. Jervarceay Tapley, along with a couple of other young men, they were all charged for what they did.
