Being a huge Toombs County football fan, I started worrying about next season way too early. Last year I nearly missed the rivalry game because nobody told me the date changed. So this time I swore I’d get the whole 2025 schedule locked down by August.
The Initial Search Disaster
First dumb move: I straight up typed “Toombs County football 2025 schedule” into Google. Got nothing but last year’s results and some shady ticket resellers. Clicked the official school district site next – total ghost town. Their athletics page still showed spring baseball stuff from March.
Phone Tag With Coaches
Figured I’d call the athletic office directly. Rang fifteen times before some secretary picked up. She transferred me to Coach Davis voicemail. Left two messages that week – crickets. Finally caught him during lunch break the following Tuesday. He sounded exhausted: “Man, even I don’t have final times yet – GHSA hasn’t approved our field permits!”
The Social Media Rabbit Hole
Went digging through Facebook team pages next. Found the booster club’s post from May – just a blurred screenshot of proposed dates scribbled on whiteboard. Comments section was chaos:
- Jenny Smith arguing about Friday night conflicts
- Some guy claiming the Savannah game moved to Saturday
- Booster treasurer deleting rumors every 10 minutes
Twitter was worse. Players kept retelling different versions like a game of telephone. QB’s tweet said homecoming Oct 3rd but lineman posted Oct 10th. Both got deleted after coach’s warning.
Breakthrough At The Diner
Gave up until I ran into Ms. Patterson at Waffle House. Her kid’s the kicker. She whipped out her phone showing group text from AD: “FINAL SCHEDULE CONFIRMED TODAY” with PDF attached. Made her forward that email pronto while I scribbled dates on napkins:
- Aug 29 vs Johnson County – home 7:30 PM
- Sep 5 @ Coffee High – away 7:30 PM
- Sep 12 vs Ware County – home 7:30 PM
- Sep 26 @ Benedictine – away 7:30 PM
- Oct 10 vs Swainsboro (Homecoming) – 7:00 PM
- Oct 24 @ Dublin – away 7:30 PM
- Nov 7 vs Metter – Senior Night 7:00 PM
Post-season dates TBD obviously. Took me napkin cross-referencing to spot she’d sent wrong version first – that’d have me showing up October 3rd for nonexistent game.
Lessons Learned
Turns out nobody officially publishes this crap early. Even coaches get last-minute updates. My advice? Befriend team moms in July. Buy them coffee monthly. Only reason I’m not screwed is Ms. Patterson loves extra bacon with her waffles.
