Well, I’ve always been a huge NBA fan, and I’ve been to quite a few games. But I’ve always wondered, how long is the average NBA game? So, I decided to find out myself. I started by making a plan. I wanted to go to as many games as possible and record the start and end times.
I first bought tickets to a bunch of different NBA games. I went to games in different cities, like New York, LA, and Chicago. When I got to the arena, I made sure to arrive early. I sat down, got my snacks ready, and waited for the game to start. As soon as the referee blew the whistle to start the game, I hit the stopwatch on my phone.
During the game, I was really into it. I cheered for my favorite teams, ate hot dogs, and watched all the amazing plays. But I also kept an eye on the time. Every once in a while, I’d look at my stopwatch to see how long the game had been going.
After the game ended, I immediately stopped the stopwatch. I wrote down the total time on a piece of paper. I did this for every single game I went to. I went to about 10 games in total.
Once I had all the data, I sat down at my kitchen table. I took out a calculator and added up all the durations of the games. Then I divided that total by the number of games, which was 10. And that’s how I got the average duration.
Turns out, the average NBA game lasted around 2 hours and 30 minutes. But it wasn’t always exactly that. Some games were a bit shorter, maybe like 2 hours and 15 minutes. And some were longer, up to 2 hours and 45 minutes. This is probably because of things like overtime, timeouts, and how fast or slow the game’s pace was.

So, there you have it! That’s how I figured out the average duration of an NBA game. It was a fun little project, and now I know for sure how long I should expect to be at an NBA game.
