So my kid wanted a football themed birthday cake, and I thought why not make it extra cool? Had to try some new decorating tricks. Here’s exactly what I did, step by messy step.

Getting the Base Ready
First, baked my standard chocolate cake – two big 9-inch rounds. While those cooled completely (seriously, don’t rush this part!), I whipped up a massive batch of vanilla buttercream. Had to split it and color some green for the “pitch” and leave some white for detailing. Used gel food coloring, way better than the liquid stuff.
The 5 Ways I Actually Tried Decorating
Looked online for ideas, got totally overwhelmed. Finally just dove in and tried these five things for real:
- Hand-Painted Players: Grabbed an edible marker and some thinned-out brown icing gel. Freehand sketched two little football players on parchment paper first. Then, heart pounding, piped the outlines directly onto the smooth buttercream with white icing. Carefully flooded the outlines with the brown gel. Looked a bit wonky close up, but from a distance? Perfect! Kid yelled “That’s Messi!”… close enough.
- Edible Image Cutouts: Found this edible printer paper online. Printed out a small football, the birthday boy’s favorite team logo, and some jersey numbers. Cut them out like little stickers. Placed them on spots that looked a bit empty after painting. Easy peasy, looked totally pro. Like instant stickers but you can eat ’em.
- Crumbled Cookies for Texture: Had some chocolate cookies lying around. Crushed ’em up super fine. Mixed most into the buttercream on top for a muddy pitch look, but left a clean “goal mouth” area. Then, sprinkled extra crumbs around the edges. Added awesome texture and tasted great. Messy but worth it.
- Candy Goal Posts: Melted white chocolate wafers. Piped thin lines onto parchment to make goal posts and a crossbar. Stuck ’em together while still warm. Broke a few… chocolate is tricky! Got one decent pair. Let them set hard on the fridge. Jammed them into the “pitch” icing near the edge. Bam! Instant football field structure.
- Frosting Footballs: Used an oval piping tip I almost forgot I had. Pipe little football blobs onto wax paper. Stuck ’em in the freezer. While hard, used a toothpick dipped in brown gel to draw the laces. Placed ’em randomly on the cake later. Super simple, added 3D pop.
Putting It All Together & The Finish
Stacked the cakes with a bunch of buttercream in between. Frosted the outside thick with the green icing, trying to make it look grassy. Wiped the spatula after every few swipes to keep it kinda clean. Then came the fun part: slapped on the painted players, stuck on the edible images, pressed in the candy goal posts, sprinkled more cookie crumbs strategically, and dotted the whole thing with my little piped footballs.
Took ages, kitchen looked like a bomb site, but when my kid saw it? Face lit up brighter than the oven light. Proof you don’t need fancy tools to make a cake look awesome, just some messy hands-on trying stuff out. Would totally recommend wrestling with edible markers again!
