Okay so yesterday I got curious about Maccabi Tel Aviv playing Real Sociedad. Big game, right? Europa League stuff. Everyone kept asking, “Who’s gonna start?” So I figured, hell, let’s try to predict the lineup myself. Just for fun, see if I can get close.

First Thing: Where the Hell Do You Even Start?
Honestly, felt a bit lost at first. These aren’t Premier League teams plastered everywhere. I needed a plan.
My stupid simple plan:
- Last Game: What team did Maccabi put out last time they played? That’s usually the best clue.
- Injury Nightmare: Players get hurt, especially midweek. Who’s limping? Who’s definitely out? Gotta check that.
- Manager’s Brain: What’s this coach like? Does he love to rotate players like crazy, or stick with his main guys?
- Sociedad’s Thing: Maccabi ain’t playing in a vacuum. How strong is Sociedad? Should Maccabi go all defense or try to attack?
Digging Around Like a Maniac
Time to hit the internet hard. Didn’t need fancy sites, just the basics.
Found some decent Israeli sports news pages. Tried Google Translate; it kinda worked, kinda sounded funny. Checked their last league game lineup – that was easy. Then the hunt for injuries began. Twitter actually helped here! Fans moaning about player X being injured or player Y just back. Saw a few names popping up – like Peretz the goalie was out, I think? And maybe some defender named Tibi. Scrolled through fan forums too. Loads of speculation, takes it with a big bag of salt.
Remembered Sociedad are pretty damn good, especially at home. So Maccabi probably wouldn’t go gung-ho attack, right? Maybe setup a bit tougher, harder to break down. That usually means players good at defending.

Trying to Piece the Damn Puzzle Together
Okay, brain hurting time. Sat down with a notepad.
Goalkeeper: Peretz out? Saw chatter about their backup keeper, Daniel Peretz… wait no, same guy? Got confused. Thought I saw something about a different keeper, maybe Daniel Tenenbaum? Arggh. Settled on Daniel Peretz because everyone seemed to mention him as definite. Unless he was hurt? Messy. Stuck with Peretz.
Defenders: Saw their usual back four last game. Saborit, Goldberg, some guy Peretz (not the goalie), Pore? Knew Tibi might be out injured, so needed a replacement. Started thinking Saborit, Goldberg, Davidzada, Pore. Solid enough? Maybe.
Midfielders: Here’s where it gets sticky. They have this key player, Zahavi, obviously gonna play, probably behind the striker. Who partners him? Some names floated: Kanca, Biton? Remembered Biton usually plays deeper. Biton was a lock. Maybe Lavi next to him? Or perhaps Kanichowsky? Went with Kanca because he seemed to play recently. Zahavi upfront isn’t a classic striker, so maybe Culen starts as the actual striker? Or maybe it’s Kanichowsky pushed forward? Ugh, headaches.
Attack: Zahavi plays basically everywhere. Decided Zahavi and Kanichowsky would probably be the main guys, with maybe Culen as the striker if they play one. Sherry is fast, maybe he starts wide?

The Final Guess (Probably Wrong)
After way too much overthinking and doubting myself every two seconds, I scribbled down my best shot:
Maccabi Tel Aviv Predicted Lineup:
- GK: Daniel Peretz
- DEF: Saborit, Goldberg, Davidzada, Pore
- MID: Biton, Lavi; Kanichowsky, Zahavi, Sherry
- ST: Culen
Explained to myself: Peretz in goal cause I think he’s fit? Defense the usual suspects without Tibi. Biton and Lavi holding midfielders. Kanichowsky, Zahavi, and Sherry causing problems attacking-wise. Culen leading the line as the big man. Manager probably prioritizes being hard to beat away to a strong Sociedad.
Why Even Bother Doing This?
It’s honestly just fun. Makes the game more interesting when you’ve actually thought about the teams beforehand, not just watching names run around. Forces you to learn a bit about players and tactics you wouldn’t normally care about. Plus, getting one prediction right feels weirdly satisfying. Mostly I’ll just be way off though, haha!
Gonna watch the game tonight and see how many I messed up. Guaranteed plenty! Cheers.
